A Temple of Transparency
A clear masterpiece made from PERSPEX® acrylic
PERSPEX® acrylic has created a dramatic scene with bespoke fabricators, Zone Creations. The sculpture, Trasparenza, by Andrea Greenlees was created using 12mm thick PERSPEX® Clear acrylic, all intricately laser cut at Zone Creations London workshop before majestically rising over four meters high for 70,000 visitors at the 2016 annual Burning Man arts festival at Black Rock City, Nevada, USA.
Trasparenza, Temple of Transparency, celebrates emerging from darkness into light. In appearance, the structure resembles a sparkling crystal crown. Twelve turreted triangular towers, connected in a circular plan, with two arched doorways, form the chapel-like installation, which visitors can enjoy from both inside and out. The installation is totally transparent, and at night is illuminated with low colour-phasing LED lighting, dispersing colour across the laser-cut imagery of the PERSPEX® acrylic panels.
Zone’s designers digitised the artist’s intricate pattern design into each laser cut panel. Adding to the complexity of design, the sculpture had to remain resilient to the demands of regular footfall whilst maintaining the delicate shapes and patterns within the design. The impact resistance of PERSPEX® Clear acrylic coupled with the rigidly of a 12mm thick sheet provided the perfect material strength whilst maintaining optimum light transmission.
